Overview and benefit
This activity uses some of the guess the sound sounds, to help children learn more about different animals.
- Guess the sounds & matching pictures
- Stuffed toy or puppets of each animal (optional)
- Up to three weeks
How it works
Children listen out for the animal sound and then run to the relevant picture on the wall. They then pretend to be that animal and make the sounds themselves.
What to do in the class
Put four or five pictures of animals around the hall. Explain to the children that we are going to hear some different animals. Now play one of the sounds and encourage children to identify it and then run to the relevant picture. When you get to the picture tell the children what the animal is, and perhaps show them a stuffed toy or a glove puppet of the animal and play the sound again. Ask the children something about the animal (e.g. how many legs has it got, or where does it live, or how does it move. Get the children to pretend to be that animal and make the same sounds.
Now play another sound and repeat the activity.
